THE CAT'S MEOW
Rain is steadily falling and it’s one of those gloomy, Midwestern fall days I love. The fact that I don’t have to drive anywhere today isn’t lost on me, and I’m grateful I get to stay inside and work from home.
My office faces the front of our house and the walkway is covered with fallen leaves. Funny, but I can still see my little girls standing out there wearing their black cat costumes, and clutching the pumpkin candy buckets a neighbor had passed down to them.
I had always made it a point to make their costumes. The store-bought ones were usually made from plastic, unoriginal and cheesy, but that year, I struggled to come up with ideas.
So I dressed them in black tops and leggings, cut-up and stuffed the legs of an old pair of hose to make their tails and one set of ears, and glued fuzzy cat ears onto a black head band for the other. Once I painted on their whiskers and darkened the tips of their noses, we had two little cats ready to prowl the neighborhood.
That Halloween lives so vividly in my mind, it could have been yesterday, not 26 years ago. I continue to go back to it every October not only because I miss those little girls in their homemade costumes, but because I can’t believe how much plastic junk we’ve convinced ourselves we need to celebrate Halloween.
All the plastic costumes, plastic decorations and plastic buckets filled with candy that’s wrapped in even more plastic. It makes me want to scream!
I know, not everyone has the time or patience to make costumes. Believe me, I get it. One year I cut holes into an old sheet and sent my oldest off to middle-school as a ghost.
She was mortified, but she got a lot of attention.
The thing is, Halloween doesn’t have to come with all the plastic trash, and we don’t have to buy it.
Before you head out to the store, look around your home and use what you can to make your costumes and decorations. An old sheet, a forgotten dress, a cardboard box, or a pair of tights may be all you need to create something awesome and original.
You’ll save the environment and a ton of money, and you may even create a memory that will stick with you for the next 25 years!
Now that’s what I call a treat!
